The Be The Cause® Mind Map: How to Decode Your Patterns in 9 Panels

After 35 years of clinical practice, I built one system that does what no single tool I had been trained in could do alone. Nine panels. Three movements. A complete map of how patterns get installed, why they keep running, and exactly what it takes to interrupt them. This is the framework I have used with clients for over three decades, explained the way I actually teach it.

Most therapy gives you pieces.

It gives you insight into your childhood. It gives you tools for your anxiety. It gives you language for your relationships. It gives you breathing exercises, journaling prompts, mindfulness practices, somatic techniques. All of it can be useful. None of it, by itself, is a map.

The reason most people stay stuck — even after years of good therapy, hundreds of self-help books, and dozens of well-intentioned attempts — is not that the pieces are wrong. It is that the pieces have not been assembled into a coherent picture of how the system actually works.

That is what the Mind Map does.

After 35 years sitting across from clients in clinical practice, I started to see a pattern under the patterns. There were nine moving parts in every case. Always nine. Whether the presenting problem was anxiety, narcissistic abuse, burnout, addiction, identity loss, or relational chaos, the same nine panels showed up in the same sequence. Once I could see it, I could not unsee it. And I could not, in good conscience, keep treating it piece by piece anymore.

So I built the Mind Map. Nine panels organized into three movements: Encode, Decode, Recode. The first three panels show you how the pattern was installed. The middle three show you how it has been keeping you stuck. The final three show you how to install something new.

This is the most complete walkthrough of the framework I have ever published. Read it slowly. Bring yourself to it. By the time you finish, you will have something most people who have tried to heal have never had. A whole map.

How the Mind Map works

Before I walk you through the panels, I want you to understand why nine, and why these nine.

Every adult pattern has a structure. It does not appear out of nowhere. It is not a personality flaw. It is not a moral failing. It is a system. A system that was assembled, piece by piece, in childhood — and has been running, faithfully, in the background of your adult life ever since.

The Mind Map disassembles that system into its component parts. Once you can see the parts, you can see how they are connected. Once you can see the connections, you can begin to interrupt them. And once you can interrupt them, you can install a new system in their place.

The three movements are not stages of healing. They are dimensions of the same pattern, all happening simultaneously inside you, every day. Encoding is what was installed. Decoding is what is running right now. Recoding is what is becoming possible.

Encode: how the pattern was installed (Panels 1, 2, 3)

Decode: how the pattern is keeping you stuck (Panels 4, 5, 6)

Recode: how to install something new (Panels 7, 8, 9)

Now let's walk through each one.

ACT ONE

ENCODE — How the Pattern Was Installed

Encoding is the first three panels of the Mind Map. They cover the territory of childhood — your family of origin, the wounds you absorbed, and the core beliefs those wounds installed in your nervous system before you had the language to question them.

Some readers will arrive at this work with parents who were genuinely cruel. Others with parents who were doing their best in difficult circumstances. The framework does not require you to villainize anyone. It only requires you to see what was installed, regardless of how or by whom.

PANEL 01 · Wounds — Family of Origin

Every nervous system is shaped by the environment it grew up in. Not the environment you remember consciously but the one your body absorbed.

Was your home stable, or unpredictable? Was love freely given, or did you have to earn it? Were your feelings welcomed, or dismissed? Did the adults in your life make you feel safe, or did you become the one managing their moods? Were you allowed to be a child, or did you have to become a small adult before your time?

The wounds of your family of origin are not always dramatic. Some of the deepest wounds are quiet. Chronic emotional unavailability. The parent who was physically present but psychologically absent. The household where everyone was technically fine, but nobody was truly seen. These are the wounds that go unnamed for the longest, because they do not look like wounds from the outside.

Panel 1 asks you to look at the climate, not just the events. What did it feel like to be a child in your home? That feeling, repeated thousands of times across thousands of small moments, is what got encoded.

PANEL 02 · Reactions — How You Responded to the Wound

A child cannot leave. A child cannot reason their way out. A child cannot say, "This is unacceptable, I am going to seek help elsewhere." The child can only react. And the reactions a child develops to survive their family of origin are the reactions that get installed as default responses for the rest of their life.

Panel 2 looks at how you reacted to the wound. Did you go quiet? Did you get loud? Did you become invisible, or did you become indispensable? Did you fight, flee, freeze, or fawn? Did you become the perfect child, the rebellious child, the parentified child, the lost child?

These reactions made sense at the time. They were intelligent. They were the best survival strategy available to the child you were, given the resources you had. But here is the thing about survival strategies that get installed in childhood: they do not turn off when the threat is gone. They become your personality — or what you think is your personality. Your nervous system keeps running them long after the original danger has passed, because the original program never got updated.

PANEL 03 · Negative Core Beliefs — The System-Gone-Wrong Blueprint

Out of the wounds and the reactions, a set of conclusions form. About yourself. About other people. About love. About what you are worth. About what is possible. These conclusions feel like facts. They are not facts. They are core beliefs, installed by experiences that no child should have had to interpret on their own, and yet did.

Common negative core beliefs I see again and again in my practice:

I am only worthy when I am useful.

If I am fully myself, I will be left.

Love must be earned. It cannot be given freely.

My needs are too much.

I am responsible for other people's feelings.

If something good happens, something bad is coming.

I have to be the strong one. There is no one else.

Panel 3 is the foundation of the system-gone-wrong. These beliefs are not on the surface of your awareness. They are below it. They are running the operating system. You may not even know they are there until you start tracing your repetitive patterns backwards and notice that all of them seem to point to the same handful of unspoken assumptions.

Negative core beliefs do not feel like beliefs. They feel like reality. That is what makes them so difficult to see and so essential to decode.

ACT TWO

DECODE — How the Pattern Is Keeping You Stuck

If Encode is about how the pattern got installed, Decode is about how it is running right now, in your adult life. These middle three panels — Chaos, Defenses, and Breakdown / Breakthrough — are where most people are stuck when they come to me. They can feel something is wrong. They can sense the pattern. But they cannot see how it is operating, because they are inside of it.

This is the territory most therapy attempts to address and where most therapy gets thinnest. The decoding work requires you to see your own defenses, name your own chaos, and recognize when your system is breaking down. It is uncomfortable. It is also where the change actually begins.

PANEL 04 · Chaos — The Result of a System Gone Wrong

When the operating system is built on negative core beliefs, the output is chaos. Not always external chaos — though sometimes that too. More often, internal chaos. The chaos of a life that looks fine on paper but feels wrong from the inside.

Chaos is the symptom. It is what brought you to read an article like this in the first place. It is the relationship that keeps not working. The career that feels like a costume. The friendships that exhaust you. The body that will not relax. The mind that will not stop. The vague but persistent sense that something is off, even when you cannot name what.

People come to my office for the chaos. They want me to fix the chaos. But chaos cannot be fixed at the level of the chaos. Chaos is downstream. The work has to go upstream back to the negative core beliefs that are generating it. Until that happens, you can change the relationship, change the job, change the city, change the friend group, and the chaos will follow you. Because the chaos is not coming from the circumstances. It is coming from the system.

PANEL 05 · Defenses — Your Psychological Prison

Defenses are the strategies your psyche has developed to protect you from feeling the full weight of the underlying wound. Some of them are obvious like addiction, avoidance, rage, or withdrawal. Most of them are not. Most of them are sophisticated, socially acceptable, sometimes even admired.

Perfectionism is a defense. So is intellectualization — the habit of analyzing your feelings instead of feeling them. So is over-functioning — the strategy of being so capable, so reliable, so on top of everything that no one ever has to ask if you are okay. So is humor. So is staying busy. So is the constant performance of okayness.

Defenses are called defenses because they were once protective. They kept the wound from overwhelming you. The problem is that they are also walls. The same defense that protects you from the wound also keeps you from the parts of life that would actually heal it: intimacy, presence, rest, real connection, being known. Your psychological prison is the elaborate set of strategies that keep you safe from being touched — by pain, but also by love.

Your defenses are not your enemies. They were the smartest thing you knew how to do at the time. The work is not to demolish them. The work is to outgrow them.

PANEL 06 · Breakdown / Breakthrough — When the System Cracks

Eventually, the system cracks. It always does. The defenses stop working. The chaos becomes louder than the strategies you have built to manage it. Something happens — a divorce, a death, a diagnosis, a child leaving home, a fortieth birthday, a fiftieth, a partner saying "I cannot do this anymore." The crack does not have to be dramatic. Sometimes it is just an ordinary Tuesday afternoon when something small breaks something inside you that had been holding for decades.

This is Panel 6. The breakdown.

Most people experience the breakdown as catastrophe. "Everything is falling apart." "I cannot do this anymore." "What is wrong with me." From inside the moment, it feels like the worst thing that has ever happened.

But the breakdown is also the breakthrough. It is the moment the system finally fails loud enough that you cannot ignore it. The defenses that have been carrying you can no longer carry you. The chaos that has been managed can no longer be managed. The negative core beliefs that have been operating in the dark are finally visible, because they have generated a crisis large enough to demand your attention.

If you are reading this article, there is a reasonable chance you are in some version of this panel right now. Not necessarily a dramatic version. Maybe just the quieter, more disorienting version: the version where you sense, somehow, that what you have been doing is no longer going to work, and you do not yet know what comes next. That is the breakthrough disguised as breakdown. It is the most painful and also the most important panel of the entire Mind Map. Because it is the panel where change becomes possible.

ACT THREE

RECODE — How to Install Something New

The final three panels — Paradigm Shift, Healing, and Unity — are the recode. This is the work most therapy never reaches, because it requires the first six panels to have been done properly. You cannot recode what you have not yet decoded. You cannot install a new blueprint while the old one is still running unchallenged in the background.

Recode is also where the most important shift happens. It is where the framework stops being something you understand and starts being something you live. This is the territory my 12-Session Therapy Program is built to walk clients through, and the part of the work that, in my experience, almost never happens without a structured path.

PANEL 07 · Paradigm Shift — A New Way of Seeing

A paradigm shift is not a thought. It is a structural change in how you perceive yourself, other people, and what is possible. Thoughts can be replaced. Paradigms have to be lived into.

The shift typically happens after a lot of decoding work. You start to see, in real time, the patterns you have been running. You catch yourself in the middle of an old reaction and realize, "Oh — that is the wound. That is not actually what is happening right now." You start to question the negative core beliefs that have been operating as facts your whole life. You begin to notice that you are not, in fact, too much. That love does not, in fact, have to be earned. That you are not, in fact, only worthy when you are useful.

These are not affirmations. These are paradigm shifts. They feel different from positive thinking. Positive thinking is something you do on top of an old belief. A paradigm shift is the old belief actually loosening its grip on your nervous system, because you have done enough decoding work to no longer need it.

This is where the framework starts to do its real work. Not in the head. In the wiring.

PANEL 08 · Healing — The New System-Gone-Right Blueprint

Once a paradigm shift has occurred, the work of healing is to install it. Not once. Daily. Repeatedly. Slowly enough that your nervous system has time to adjust to the new configuration.

Healing in the Mind Map sense is not the absence of pain. It is the presence of a new operating system. You are still going to feel things. You are still going to have hard days. You are still going to encounter situations that activate the old wounds. The difference is what your system does with the activation. Instead of routing it through the old defenses, the old chaos, the old core beliefs — you have a new path.

The new path is structural. It includes new daily practices, new boundary scripts, new emotional regulation tools, new relational standards, a new internal narrative. None of it is dramatic. All of it, repeated consistently, becomes the new blueprint. Healing is not an event. It is a practice.

Healing is not the absence of pain. It is the presence of a new operating system.

PANEL 09 · Unity — Wisdom and Paying It Forward

The ninth panel is the one most frameworks do not include. I include it because I have watched, over and over, what happens to people who complete the work. They do not just get better. They get integrated. The fragments of self that were separated by the original wounds — the wounded child, the survival self, the defended adult — come back into relationship with each other. The internal civil war ends. There is unity.

And almost without exception, something else happens. The person who has done the work becomes someone other people can heal around. Not because they are giving advice. Not because they are running workshops. Just because they are walking through the world with a different nervous system, and that nervous system is regulating other nervous systems in their orbit. Their children. Their partners. Their friends. Their colleagues.

This is what I mean by paying it forward. Not as a project. As a consequence. When you recode the original blueprint, you stop transmitting the wound to the people you love. The cycle ends with you. That is unity. That is the ninth panel. That is, in some sense, the entire point.

Putting all nine panels together

If you have read this far, you have just walked through the most complete clinical framework for understanding adult patterns I have been able to develop in 35 years of practice. Nine panels. Three movements. A whole map.

Some of you are going to put this article down and start to see the panels operating in your own life within the next 24 hours. You will catch yourself in a defense (Panel 5) and trace it back to a wound (Panel 1). You will notice a negative core belief (Panel 3) generating the chaos in your relationship (Panel 4). You will recognize that the breakdown you have been having (Panel 6) might actually be the doorway you have been waiting for.

Others are going to need more support to do this work and that is appropriate. The Mind Map is a framework, not a self-help technique. Doing the decoding alone is possible for some people. For most, especially when the original wounds were significant, structured support is what makes the difference between understanding the framework and actually living it.

The Be The Cause® Mind Map Video Series

If you want to go deeper than this article can take you, I have built a complete video series that walks through every panel in detail, with examples, exercises, and the full clinical depth I could not include here.

The Be The Cause® Mind Map Video Series is approximately three hours of content, organized into nine modules, one per panel. It includes:

Detailed walkthroughs of each panel with case examples (anonymized) from my clinical practice

Worksheets and self-assessment tools you can use as you watch

The exact questions I ask clients to begin decoding each panel

Practical recode exercises you can begin immediately

Lifetime access — go through it once, or come back to specific panels as you need them

Watch the Mind Map Video Series here. https://psychologicalhealingcenter.com/free-consultation

The series is designed to be a complete self-guided introduction to the framework. For some people, it is enough. For others, it becomes the foundation that prepares them to enter the 12-Session Therapy Program — which is the structured 1:1 application of the Mind Map to their specific patterns.

Either way, it begins with seeing the whole map clearly. Which, if you have read this far, you are now closer to than you were two thousand words ago.

This is not a framework about fixing you. It is a framework about returning you to alignment with your truth. The wounds were real. The patterns were intelligent. The system worked, given what was available. And now — finally — you have something better available. — Dr. Judy
