Motivational Issues

In contemporary motivation theory, a standard belief is that every behavior represents a desire to adapt to one’s surroundings. It is not uncommon for theorists to ask the question, “What are the origins of this adaptive behavior?” Over time, psychologists have made countless attempts to understand the undercurrent of why people lose motivation in their lives. There are many theories for such reasons. A common approach by psychologists would be to look at evolutionary psychology from the origins of Darwinian theory. From this perspective, it might be understood by looking back to our earliest ancestors who’s very survival was based on their ability to stay motivated towards self-preservation. Based on this theory, it may seem that today’s undercurrent of motivation lack might be attributed to an overwhelming amount of excess that surrounds the common person.

Although this fact raises concern, it does not provide an understanding of how one might shift out of this lack of motivation predicament. It is Dr. Judy Rosenberg’s belief that childhood wounds are often the cause of such instances such as a lack of motivation. Dr. Judy is the founder of the Psychological Healing Center and creator of the Mind Map System. It is her belief that igniting motivation begins through a deep and reflective understanding about where we originate not as a species, but as individuals. Motivation theorists have long been interested in the way people feel. Further, emotions play an important role in the way individuals experience themselves and their surroundings. Other theorists have argued that emotions represent the most primitive way in which the brain operates. Using the Mind Map System, a person can explore the ways in which childhood wounds have encoded into negative emotional scripts. At the heart of the system stems one important factor, awareness. When an individual can systematically observe their past experiences in such a way that allows them to see themselves in a new and authentic way, they are more able to have a positive shift in their life. As we develop, we learn many of our beliefs, attitudes, and values from our parents. It is important to understand that not only do we learn these attributes from our parents, but also from experiences. This is an important factor that is specifically addressed using Dr. Judy’s Mind Map System.

The Mind Map System provides a way for a person to very easily categorize the ways in which these beliefs, attitudes, and values have been encoded into the person. As with many models and therapeutic approaches, mindfulness has shown to be beneficial in the process for patients who are working through the Mind Map System. According to Ellen Langer, human behavior is often mindless. Dr. Judy’s system allows a person to take their time in exploring the challenges that they once faced in their past and then implement positive healthy behaviors. Although the Mind Map System uses an attachment based philosophy, many other theories may come into play as a person works through the system. A person may find themselves becoming more aware of their negative cognitive scripts. They may become more aware of how they feel about themselves. They may even begin to see others differently as they begin to make shifts into a more positive consciousness.

According to Seymour Epstein, to achieve growth and improvement in the area of a human motivation, it is necessary to become a constructive thinker. Dr. Judy’s system allows a person to constructively explore impactful experiences from their childhood that may have led to feelings that negatively impact a person’s present day happiness. Through a conscious exploration, as well as a systematic and linear process, a person can more constructively approach themselves and their environment. The main problem with most theories that address motivation is that they fail to account for individual differences. These are factors that must be understood and recognized if a person will be able to have a paradigm shift into a more positive mental and emotional space. The Mind Map System specifically addresses individual experiences in such a way that allows them to feel validated and understood. It is a personal journey that when embarked upon, a person can begin to let go of the inauthentic self that has manifested as a result of past wounds and embrace a new and authentic version of themselves.
